Keyboard Music and its Journey

In the Baroque Period, the instruments rocked

As they were made famous by J.S. Bach

Under his influence, keyboard works grew

To the social event that everyone knew

Harpsichords, organs, and the pianoforte

Were instruments that the musicians would play

Different styles with different features

Would be used by students and teachers

Harpsichord music took after the lute

With stile brise and unmeasured preludes

Arpeggios and ornaments were found left and right

As the Couperin brothers helped it take flight

Toccatas were free in style and measure

For organ music, it brought great pleasure

Ricercares and fugues would emerge as well

Like a round song for children, but those from hell (wow, they’re hard to learn)

Then came the time for Sonatas to shine

Coming from Italy at a much later time

Deemed a major work it was so

As it paved the way for the concerto

The concerto, the pinnacle, in its musical glory

The combination of styles, music in its epitome

Different styles and different segments

Would bring the sonata to how it is in the present

So many kinds of music to be found

That filled the ears of the people around

The keyboard, the father of all instruments

Would bring music to it’s greatest sense.
